Allah swears by time in the glorious Quran. Time is a blessing, Time is a mysterious gift from Allah, But time is finite. We do not have ‘all the time in world’. Once it’s gone it’s gone, it is something we don't own and we don't earn, yet it is freely given to us. And like all blessings and bounties, Time is something we take for granted, not knowing its importance, we waste time not thinking that we are wasting it in such meaningless activities and engagements. We easily forget that, one day we would be held accountable for all the valuable moments of our existence.
Procrastination is a form of laziness, and it is a powerful weapon shaytan uses in leading us astray, our beloved our prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam used to seek refuge from shaytan. Here we can derive lessons and teachings to seek refuge also from laziness because the truth is, it'll lead to a huge loss both in this life and the hereafter.
There was an old wise Muslim man on his death bed and while on his dead bed, the people around him said to themselves... “Let’s ask for something, maybe he has some great advice to give us like he used to give us through his entire life. So they went to him and asked for a last advice. And the old man [May Allah be pleased with him] said to them “Anzartukum Sawfa”. He said to them I warn you against “Sawfa”. So what is Sawfa...? Sawfa is the Arabic word, for “I will”. One wonders why “I will”. You know…When you know that you are doing something wrong and you are disobeying Allah and then you, you say to yourself, I want to repent, I want to make Tauba. But then you say to yourself again…I will... Repent, but not now, tomorrow. After I finish doing this sin one more time. I will repent. I will repent next week. Thinking we have enough time to make Tauba.
This is one of the best weapon Shaytan uses on us, he is successful in getting people delay their good deeds or delay in repenting from their bad ways, he gives is this constant temptation in making us hold back when we want to repent or engage in any good act. And what is his ultimate aim behind this? He gets you to delay up until death reaches you, and then you leave the Dunya ending up with no record of good deeds because it has been over weigh by your bad deeds you couldn't leave. May Allah not do that to us..
My dear brothers and sisters, myself included, shaytan will come to us, Shaytan keeps on telling us, whispering in our hearts “You will repent to Allah, you will go closer to Allah, but not now tough. Just a little bit later”.
Allah Azzawajal says:
"Shaytan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality..." [Quran 2:268]
That why when you want to engage in giving Sadaqa shaytan tells you "You need that money, you need to save up more money for this and that." And he tells you to wait up until you've attain certain amount of money before giving out. And he goes to the sisters and tell them how beautiful they look, and if they cover up no one will praise their beauty, he instills in their heart the feel to start wearing Hijab only when they get old or married, and that way we fall into the trap of Shaytan.
It is a fact that Shaytan attacks good people much more than he attacks bad people. You know with bad people, Shaytan doesn’t tell them “You will repent later”, Shaytan just tells them, Go ahead, go ahead and disobey Allah, go ahead and do that sin. But with people engaged in good deeds, Shaytan actually comes to them and tell them, “You will repent, you will go back to Allah, but not now though, just a little bit later, just a little bit later." He tells the Brothers you will stop dealing in fake things which is illegal and something against to the will of Allah, but not now tough… after you have millions in your bank account. Then Allah’s willing you will stop such activities. When are you going for pilgrimage? Oh, I will…Oh you know when I am 50 or 60, actually I’m going next year, yes I will go next year. And then that next year becomes next year, next year and so on... Until you reach a point where you don’t know maybe if you will live until that next year or maybe you won’t.
Allah Azzawajal says:
"The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.". (Q4:17 & 18)
You know why Shaytan uses this trick of procrastination with us? Because if you fall into his trap, eventually one of the two things will happen. Either, you will die before you repent to Allah, or even worse, you will continue to live. But that sin that you’re doing, will become such a part of your life that you won’t be able to give it up. It will just become a regular part of who you are and you keep telling yourself. I can’t, I can’t give it up and the reason that happen it’s because we procrastinated. We didn’t repent to ALLAH…right after we sinned!
Remember Allah says:
"Shaytan makes promises to them and fills them with vain hopes, but whatever he promises them is merely delusion."
Now, knowing we have no idea on how much time we have left to live, should be a motivation for you and me. So each time we are about to do something good, or giving up a bad act and feel like delaying it, that should ring a signal in your head, that this is shaytan trying to deceive you. At times when you want to read salah shaytan reminds you that you needed to talk to someone on phone, or when you feel like reciting the Quran he reminds you of cleaning the house. Just remember this is an attack from shaytan, if you know this then you need to be alert and conscious. Just keep in mind that you can die any moment any seconds, and this good deed you're about to do, or this sin you want to give up, might be your ticket to Jannah and not doing it at that instant can be your ticket to Jahannam. You need to feel in control not controlled. May Allah protect us from falling into the clutches of shaytan and keep us steadfast on the Deen. Amin
